On May 5, 20117, at approximately 1925 hours, the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office responded to Trenholm Drive, James Island, in reference to a disturbance. Upon arrival deputies met with a complainant who advised there had been several people fighting at a party. The complainant identified a person named “Grace” as causing the disturbance and that she was wanted by the police. Deputies located “Grace” hiding in the bushes behind the residence. Upon seeking her identification it was learned that subject “Grace” was actually Savannah Grace Woods who was listed as a runaway through Charleston City Police Department.

Deputies noted that Woods appeared unsteady on her feet and appeared intoxicated. Woods was argumentative and refused to cooperate with deputies. A pick-up order was confirmed and Woods was taken into custody. Woods continued to be disorderly cursing and kicking deputies and others in the area. While attempting to secure Woods in the deputy’s’ cruiser Woods head butted the deputy several times causing the deputies tooth to break, minor cuts to the deputies lip, and minor swelling to the head from the head butt. Woods also on several occasions kicked at the windows and door of the deputy’s cruiser causing damage to the door.

Woods as lodged in the Al Cannon Detention Center on charges of Resisting Arrest, Assault on a Police Officer while Resisting Arrest, Assault and Battery 3rd Degree, and Malicious Damage To Property.

The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office was contacted this morning at approximately 7:45 am concerning a 2 year old, black male, child that was found by a Greenville Transit Authority bus driver near the intersection of White Horse Road and Lily Street. The bus driver, who had stopped the bus near the intersection, saw the child walking on the sidewalk. The driver took the child onto the bus and attempted to look for his parents without success. The driver then drove the child to the Greenville Transit Authority Office and contacted the Sheriff’s Office. Deputies began searching for the parents in the area where he was found and located the child’s parents at Emerald Commons Apartments on White Horse Road. The mother of the child had been asleep with the child in a downstairs room when the child apparently awoke and was able to walk out of the apartments. Sheriff’s Office Investigators have reunited the child with his mother and the investigation is on-going. I will send out additional details and the incident report when they become available.

Just after 8am this morning, a South Carolina Highway Patrol officer stooped to check on an abandoned vehicle on I-26 near mile marker 74 on the east bound travel side. The vehicle was abandoned in the emergency lane off the interstate. When the Trooper ran the tag of the vehicle, he discovered that it was stolen from Tennessee, so he contacted the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies and investigators from the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office responded and determined that the vehicle was associated with an active AMBER alert from Tennessee.

Investigators then contacted the authorities in Tennessee and informed them of the discovery and the agencies then began working together to further the investigation. Investigators say that they have launched a massive search in the area, but have not located the suspect or child at this point. Investigators say that they have learned for the authorities in Tennessee that there was a second vehicle involved with the AMBER alert. When the child was taken, the suspect and child fled in the vehicle that was located in Newberry County, and 3 female accomplices fled in a White Chrysler Sebring bearing unknown Florida license plates. The vehicle is shown in the AMBER alert bulletin.

Investigators say that it is very possible that all the suspects and child are now traveling in the white Sebring and are no longer in the area. However; they say that they will continue to search the area in case the suspect and/or child remained in the area. The vehicle located in Newberry County was a 1999 silver Dodge Intrepid. It bears Tennessee license plates 537 WRB and is registered to the mother of the child.

The suspects sought in connection with the AMBER alert from Greene County, Tennessee were taken into custody this morning in Miami, Florida.

The case started Sunday afternoon in Tennessee when the suspects abducted a 7 month old child; however, the case drew substantial local attention on Monday when one of the vehicles used in the abduction was found abandoned on I-26 in Newberry County.

The child was turned over to law enforcement late yesterday evening in Miami by the paternal grandmother. The child was unharmed in the incident.

The search continued for suspects, who were identified as the biological father, who did not have any custodial rights, and 3 females who assisted him in the abduction. The father and the 2 identified females were arrested this morning in Miami.

It remains unclear to local authorities what if any role the third woman identified only as “Bunny” played in the incident.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and law enforcement officers involved in this case,” said Sheriff Lee Foster. “We are pleased we could offer some small assistance to them, and we know that they are relieved that the child is home safe and the suspects are in custody. This is truly a best possible ending to every parent’s worst nightmare
