Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween is once again upon us. Sheriff Loftis would like to provide these basic safety tips so that your trick-or-treating experience is a not only a great adventure and safe night for you and your children.

You or a responsible adult should always accompany children ages 12 and under when trick-or-treating.

- Ensure costumes fit well, are flame retardant, and never obscure visibility.
- Have your trick-or-treater wear reflective clothing and/or carry a light or glowstick.
- Children over the age of 12 who are responsible enough to go without you, should stay in groups, follow an agreed upon route, and watch for cars.
- Check our website, www.gsco.org , for registered offenders residing in the area.
- Teach your children to never enter any home without you or without your permissions and only approach homes that are well-lit.
- Remind your children to stay in well-lit areas, never take shortcuts, and never go into isolated areas.
- Let your children know to tell you or a trusted adult if they see anything weird or unusual.
- Teach children to bring treats home before eating them. Eat only factory-wrapped treats unless you know the giver well.
- Teach your children to say NO and GET AWAY from any person or situation making them feel scared, uncomfortable, or confused; even if it means yelling, kicking, attracting attention or any other means of resisting. Trust their feeling, and be sure to tell a trusted adult.

Operation Medicine Drop

The Henderson County Sheriff’s Office will be participating in North Carolina’s 2^nd Annual Operation Medicine Drop. This program is administered by Safe Kids North Carolina and is designed to provide citizens with opportunities to safely and securely dispose of unused, unwanted or expired medications.

In 2010 this program collected and disposed of more than 2 million dosage units of medications across the state.

Sheriff Rick Davis encourages everyone to remove their old or unused medications and states “participation in this program will significantly reduce the chances of our children being accidentally poisoned and will aid in keeping our water systems and environment chemical free”

Medications may be dropped off on the following dates, times and locations listed below:
Friday, March 25th from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. at Jackson Park in the parking lot behind field 4.
Saturday, March 26th from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. at the following drop off sites.
Ingles located at 220 Highland Lake Road in Flat Rock.
Ingles located at 3643 Howard Gap Road (at Hwy 64) in Hendersonville.
Ingles located at 2901 Hendersonville Road in Fletcher.
Ingles located at 6400 Brevard Road in Etowah.

Officer Suspended in Henderson County

At approximately 1:46 p.m. on Friday March 18, 2011 the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office responded to Old Highway 64 to answer a report of a domestic incident between Henderson County Sheriff’s Deputy Mark Anthony Russell and his spouse.

Officers met with both parties at the residence and found both to be unharmed. Based on no evident probable cause, arrests were not made at the time of this incident.

Deputy Russell has been served with a Domestic Violence Order of Protection and has been suspended from his duties without pay pending completion of the investigation into this matter.

York Sheriff’s Office makes arrest in All Nations Church arson

At approximately 5:17 a.m., Thursday, December 23, 2010, deputies responded to a suspicious fire at the All Nations Church located at 360 Hammond Road, Fort Mill, South Carolina. The fire was discovered when area fire departments responded to a fire alarm at the church. The York County Fire Marshall’s Office has deemed the fire to be arson. The York County Sheriff’s Office has made an arrest in this case.

Through their investigation, deputies identified the suspect as being 43 year-old Fredrick Gordon Hunter IV. Arrest warrants were obtained on Hunter; the investigation determined Hunter to be in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Hunter, with the assistance of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, was arrested on December 30, 2010, without incident. Hunter was at his parent’s residence in Maryland at the time of his arrest.

Hunter did waive extradition and he was been returned to York County; he is currently incarcerated at the York County Detention Center. Hunter has been served with seven felony arrest warrants for 3rd Degree Arson; all warrants stem from the December 23, 2010, arson.

This investigation was a cooperative effort involving several law enforcement agencies including the York County Sheriff’s Office, the York County Fire Marshall’s Office, the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.
