Halloween is once again upon us. Sheriff Loftis would like to provide these basic safety tips so that your trick-or-treating experience is a not only a great adventure and safe night for you and your children.

You or a responsible adult should always accompany children ages 12 and under when trick-or-treating.

- Ensure costumes fit well, are flame retardant, and never obscure visibility.
- Have your trick-or-treater wear reflective clothing and/or carry a light or glowstick.
- Children over the age of 12 who are responsible enough to go without you, should stay in groups, follow an agreed upon route, and watch for cars.
- Check our website, www.gsco.org , for registered offenders residing in the area.
- Teach your children to never enter any home without you or without your permissions and only approach homes that are well-lit.
- Remind your children to stay in well-lit areas, never take shortcuts, and never go into isolated areas.
- Let your children know to tell you or a trusted adult if they see anything weird or unusual.
- Teach children to bring treats home before eating them. Eat only factory-wrapped treats unless you know the giver well.
- Teach your children to say NO and GET AWAY from any person or situation making them feel scared, uncomfortable, or confused; even if it means yelling, kicking, attracting attention or any other means of resisting. Trust their feeling, and be sure to tell a trusted adult.

Two men pled guilty for their roles in the 2009 shooting death of Henderson County baseball coach Oscar “Poochie” Corn.

Terry Lee Landrum and Mykel Waters, both 20, pled guilty to first and second-degree burglary and robbery with a deadly weapon. They will serve 13-and-a-half to 18 years in prison each.

According to theHendersonville Times-News, Landrum and Waters were juveniles at the time of the killing, and testified last month against Steven Ramirez, 37, who was found guilty of first-degree murder. Ramirez was sentenced to life in prison.

The newspaper reports that Corn’s wife, Joyce, testified in the Ramirez trial that three assailants entered the home she shared with Poochie Corn, who was killed by a gunshot to the head. She said Ramirez was the man who pointed a pistol at her. Landrum and Waters testified that Ramirez was the only one with a gun that day, and that they both left the hallway after Corn was struck on the head and before the shot.

HENDERSONVILLE,NC – Two men were injured Saturday morning after they cut a gas line in an empty Henderson County home.
Greg Cochran, Chief Deputy of the Henderson Country Sherriff’s Office, said that Ralph Shane Pace and Nicholas Matthew Surrett, both from Hendersonville, were underneath a home at 656 Stoney Mountain Road, attempting to steal copper wire when they cut a gas line that caused a massive explosion and fire. Cochran said the two men thought they were cutting a water line, when they cut the gas line instead.
Both Pace and Surrett were transported to Hendersonville’s Pardee Hospital by a woman, identified as Donna Renee Moody, and were later transported to different burn units with serious burns. According to the Hendersonville Times-News, investigators made the connection between the two burned men and the house fire after a North Carolina State Patrol trooper noticed the two men being admitted to the hospital, and knew that fire departments had responded to a house fire. The newspaper reports that the trooper contacted Henderson County Sheriff’s officers to alert them to the burn patients.
Moody, who deputies believe was the lookout for the two men, was charged with breaking and entering, and was being held on a $6,000 bond. The two men haven’t been charged at present time, due to the nature of their injuries.
The house was incredibly damaged.
