Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween is once again upon us. Sheriff Loftis would like to provide these basic safety tips so that your trick-or-treating experience is a not only a great adventure and safe night for you and your children.

You or a responsible adult should always accompany children ages 12 and under when trick-or-treating.

- Ensure costumes fit well, are flame retardant, and never obscure visibility.
- Have your trick-or-treater wear reflective clothing and/or carry a light or glowstick.
- Children over the age of 12 who are responsible enough to go without you, should stay in groups, follow an agreed upon route, and watch for cars.
- Check our website, www.gsco.org , for registered offenders residing in the area.
- Teach your children to never enter any home without you or without your permissions and only approach homes that are well-lit.
- Remind your children to stay in well-lit areas, never take shortcuts, and never go into isolated areas.
- Let your children know to tell you or a trusted adult if they see anything weird or unusual.
- Teach children to bring treats home before eating them. Eat only factory-wrapped treats unless you know the giver well.
- Teach your children to say NO and GET AWAY from any person or situation making them feel scared, uncomfortable, or confused; even if it means yelling, kicking, attracting attention or any other means of resisting. Trust their feeling, and be sure to tell a trusted adult.

High Speed Pursuit Of Drunk Driver Ends In Spartanburg County

A Boston, Mass. man received a 10-year prison sentence today for an alcohol-related wreck on I-85 that injured two passengers in his car. Anyelo Fernandez, 39, pleaded guilty to felony driving under the influence with great bodily injury, failure to stop for a blue light and siren with great bodily injury and child endangerment before Circuit Judge Mark Hayes.
The wreck occurred Oct. 7, 2010 on I-85 near Highway 9 when Fernandez rear-ended a tractor-trailer truck about 10:30 p.m. A 25-year-old passenger sustained a leg fracture that required surgery to repair. The injured woman’s two-year-old son was also a passenger in the car. A South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper attempted stop Fernandez’s car for erratic driving in Cherokee County. When Fernandez refused to stop, the trooper initiated a high-speed pursuit into Spartanburg County. The defendant passed cars on both shoulders of the interstate and nearly side-swiped several vehicles while weaving through traffic at speeds of more than 100 mph. When the pursuit entered a construction zone, the trooper terminated the pursuit and continued following Fernandez at a safe distance.
Fernandez’s blood alcohol level was .13 in a post-wreck test administered at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
The traffic unit of the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office investigated the wreck. Assistant Solicitor Zach Ellis entered the trooper’s in-car video into evidence during the guilty plea.
“The defendant drove with a complete disregard toward the safety of others,” Ellis said. “Somebody could have easily been killed as a result of his reckless actions.”

WANTED: Spartanburg Murder Suspects On The Run

On July 25, 2011 Deputies were called to Keats Drive in Spartanburg County, SC in reference to the discovery of a deceased person. Upon arrival Deputies found the body of Mr. DeAndre Fulton-Smith inside his apartment. Investigators began to search for a 2011 Toyota Camry with Texas license plates that had been rented by Mr. Fulton-Smith. On July 23, 2011 Deputies of the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office had found the Toyota Camry burned on a side street off of Whitehorse Road in Greenville County, SC. The investigation into this case has resulted in the identification of Mr. Sama Chaka Quinland, 20 years old of Congaree Road in Greenville, SC as the person responsible for the death of Mr. Fulton-Smith. Mr. Sama Quinland has been charged with one count each of Murder and Armed Robbery while Armed with a Deadly Weapon. Ms. Shapon Elisse Quinland, 21 years old and Mr. Michael Seth Choice, 22 years old, both of Congaree Road, Greenville, SC have been charged with one count each of Accessory After the Fact to Murder. Mr. Sama Quinland and Ms. Shapon Quinland are brother and sister while Mr. Choice is a brother-in-law to Mr. Quinland. All three suspects are hiding from authorities.

Investigators are not prepared to disclose any further information on their investigation at this time. WANTED – Criminal Trio Wanted For Spartanburg Robberies

On June 28th and again on June 29th, a trio of criminals targeted
unsuspecting female senior citizens by stealing their wallets from their
purses. The first incident took place on June 28th
at the Sam’s Club located on Peachwood Centre Drive in Spartanburg
County, SC. The trio, a black male, a black female and a white female,
are seen on video tape targeting the victim. The white female distracts
the victim while the black male steals the wallet from the victim’s
purse. The black female serves as a lookout for the group. On June 29th
the same trio target a victim who was shopping at Target located on
Warren H. Abernathy Highway in Spartanburg County, SC. The trio use the
same tactics as before but this time they used the victim’s credit card
to purchase gift cards.

In the video, the black male is wearing a light
colored ball cap, glasses and a bright turquoise colored short sleeve
shirt. The black female is wearing glasses, a dark color sleeveless
jumper with floral designs and her hair is straight and pulled back. The
white female has dark color hair which is pulled to one side and she is
wearing a light colored top and Capri pants.

18 Year Prison Sentence for Cherokee County Burglary

A Spartanburg man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison after he admitted to burglarizing a Cherokee County home.

Johnny M. Kinder, 33, pleaded guilty to first-degree burglary Monday afternoon at the Cherokee County Courthouse. He will serve 80 percent of Circuit Judge Mark Hayes’ prison sentence before he is eligible for release.

Kinder broke into a Union Highway home on June 24, 2009. He admitted to taking a camera and other assorted tools and pawning the stolen property that same day at a Spartanburg County pawn shop. A surveillance camera at the victim’s home captured Kinder and another person loading the stolen items into a black Pontiac.
Three days after the burglary, Cherokee County deputies stopped a Pontiac that matched the description of the car caught on the surveillance camera. The driver and the passenger fled the traffic stop on foot. Investigators determined the car was stolen out of Spartanburg County and it carried a license plate that was supposed to be on another car owned by Kinder. Kinder’s wallet was also found inside the stolen vehicle. The wallet contained Kinder’s identification card.

Deputies also identified Kinder on the surveillance video of the pawn shop. Kinder’s prior criminal record contained multiple convictions for property offenses.
