Halloween is once again upon us. Sheriff Loftis would like to provide these basic safety tips so that your trick-or-treating experience is a not only a great adventure and safe night for you and your children.

You or a responsible adult should always accompany children ages 12 and under when trick-or-treating.

- Ensure costumes fit well, are flame retardant, and never obscure visibility.
- Have your trick-or-treater wear reflective clothing and/or carry a light or glowstick.
- Children over the age of 12 who are responsible enough to go without you, should stay in groups, follow an agreed upon route, and watch for cars.
- Check our website, www.gsco.org , for registered offenders residing in the area.
- Teach your children to never enter any home without you or without your permissions and only approach homes that are well-lit.
- Remind your children to stay in well-lit areas, never take shortcuts, and never go into isolated areas.
- Let your children know to tell you or a trusted adult if they see anything weird or unusual.
- Teach children to bring treats home before eating them. Eat only factory-wrapped treats unless you know the giver well.
- Teach your children to say NO and GET AWAY from any person or situation making them feel scared, uncomfortable, or confused; even if it means yelling, kicking, attracting attention or any other means of resisting. Trust their feeling, and be sure to tell a trusted adult.

At approximately 9:30 pm on Sunday, October 14, 2012 the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office received a disturbance call from Skyland Drive in Greer. A female complainant from inside the residence advised dispatchers that the suspect had arrived at the home. Shortly after the call was initiated the female complainant advised that the suspect had fired a weapon into the residence and had gained entry. Once deputies arrived at the incident location attempts were made to call the suspect out of the home, however, all attempts were unsuccessful.

At approximately 10:20 pm the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office S.W.A.T. team was called to respond to the residence. Sheriff’s Office negotiators also responded. Negotiators were able to speak via telephone to the suspect and through conversation learned that the suspect had shot one victim inside the home. Deputies also learned during that time that multiple adults and children were inside the home being held by the armed suspect. Once the negotiators and S.W.A.T. team members determined that the suspect did not intend on ending the situation peacefully measures were taken to forcibly enter the home to save the hostage victims.

Shortly after midnight the S.W.A.T. team breached the doors of the residence and immediately started taking fire from the suspect. Entry team members began to return fire which resulted in a brief exchange of gunfire between the suspect and deputies. During the encounter with the suspect, two deputies were shot by the suspect. Two other deputies were able to fire at the suspect subsequently eliminating the threat. The two deputies as well as the suspect were transported to Greenville Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Ultimately, five victims to include two children were rescued from the home. One unknown male was found deceased in the home; believed to have been shot by the suspect when he initially entered the home. Three of the five victims sustained injuries during the incident that required transport to the hospital. It is unknown at this time the nature of the injuries or how the injuries occurred.

The gunshot wounds sustained by the two deputies are not life-threatening. Per Sheriff’s Office Policy, the two deputies who shot the suspect have been placed on administrative duty pending the Sheriff’s Office internal investigation in addition to the investigation currently being conducted by SLED.

Deputies are investigating the possibility of a murder-suicide after a couple was found dead in their Pickens County home. Nicole Davis said she found the bodies of her mother, Kelly Metcalf, and Metcalf’s boyfriend, Jeff Carroll, in the bedroom of their home on Red Oak Court.

“That was my mom, my best friend. She was a good person and she did not deserve this,” said Davis. “Me and my brother had to walk in, and see them in the bed. (Carroll) laying right beside (my mom) and her being covered up with covers.”

Davis said she used a spare key to get into the home after relatives were unable to reach Metcalf.

The couple split up about two months ago, but recently reconciled and were planning to marry, Davis said.

“(My mom) had just picked out her (wedding) dress, and put money down on it, and she had wanted that for so many years,” said Davis. “It’s just something you don’t ever want to have to go through. Never. Not one of your parents.”

Metcalf was a mother of three and had two grandchildren.

Operation Intercept (OPIN) the U.S. Marshals fugitive apprehension task force made up of Deputy U.S. Marshals and officers with the Pickens, Greenville, Spartanburg, and Anderson County Sheriff’s Offices, Greenville City Police, SLED, alongside Deputy US Marshals from the Appalachian Fugitive Investigative Strike Team (AFIST) in Asheville, NC and Asheville Police, announce the location and apprehension of Tavish Yeargin, Kayla Williams, and Nyia Utsey at a hotel off of Old Haywood Rd in Asheville, NC late Wednesday evening.

Yeargin, Williams, and Utsey were wanted for the alleged Murder of Sean Timothy Dinneen on September 17 in the parking lot of Crosswell Baptist Church, located on South Fishtrap Road between Easley and Greenville, SC. Pickens County Sheriff’s Office began to work diligently with the OPIN Task Force immediately after determining that all three subjects were involved in the shooting. It was believed that Yeargin, Williams, and Utsey fled the Greenville area sometime on Tuesday September 20. On Wednesday September 21, it was reported and confirmed, Yeargin had robbed a bank in Spartanburg. OPIN Task Force developed information leading them to believe the three fugitives headed north to Asheville, NC after the alleged bank robbery. On Wednesday evening OPIN traveled to Asheville and joined forces with AFIST and the Asheville Police Department. After arriving in Asheville, Marshals were provided a tip leading them to a hotel at Old Haywood Rd. Once at the hotel Marshals located the fugitive’s vehicle and were able to determine Yeargin and an unknown female had checked into a room and Utsey and Williams in a separate room. OPIN and AFIST apprehended Yeargin, Williams, and Utsey in their separate rooms without incident. All three fugitives were transported to the Buncombe County Detention Center where they are awaiting bond and extradition hearings for their return to South Carolina.

“Fleeing may have seemed reasonable to these fugitives. However, law enforcement partnerships have proven fruitful again in the location and apprehension of Yeargin, Williams, and Utsey. These three significant and rapid arrests have brought justice to the Dinneen family. Let this be an invitation to other law enforcement agencies to contact OPIN when assistance is needed.” stated Kelvin Washington, US Marshal for the District of South Carolina.

On 05/06/2011 victim reports he was in his home located at Terri Drive, Liberty, when he heard a vehicle with loud muffler drive slowly by his home then turn around down the street and come back to stop in front of his house. This was at about 200AM. Victim went outside to see who was there and saw persons walking around in the dark in his front yard, and described them as wearing bandanas. He called out to these persons to leave, that there was nothing at this house for them to steal, when one of the males approached victim and placed a handgun to his back and demanded the whereabouts of victim’s son. Victim was walked at gunpoint around the area in front of his home while the other males searched the yard of his home.
