Halloween is once again upon us. Sheriff Loftis would like to provide these basic safety tips so that your trick-or-treating experience is a not only a great adventure and safe night for you and your children.

You or a responsible adult should always accompany children ages 12 and under when trick-or-treating.

- Ensure costumes fit well, are flame retardant, and never obscure visibility.
- Have your trick-or-treater wear reflective clothing and/or carry a light or glowstick.
- Children over the age of 12 who are responsible enough to go without you, should stay in groups, follow an agreed upon route, and watch for cars.
- Check our website, www.gsco.org , for registered offenders residing in the area.
- Teach your children to never enter any home without you or without your permissions and only approach homes that are well-lit.
- Remind your children to stay in well-lit areas, never take shortcuts, and never go into isolated areas.
- Let your children know to tell you or a trusted adult if they see anything weird or unusual.
- Teach children to bring treats home before eating them. Eat only factory-wrapped treats unless you know the giver well.
- Teach your children to say NO and GET AWAY from any person or situation making them feel scared, uncomfortable, or confused; even if it means yelling, kicking, attracting attention or any other means of resisting. Trust their feeling, and be sure to tell a trusted adult.

At approximately 9:30 pm on Sunday, October 14, 2012 the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office received a disturbance call from Skyland Drive in Greer. A female complainant from inside the residence advised dispatchers that the suspect had arrived at the home. Shortly after the call was initiated the female complainant advised that the suspect had fired a weapon into the residence and had gained entry. Once deputies arrived at the incident location attempts were made to call the suspect out of the home, however, all attempts were unsuccessful.

At approximately 10:20 pm the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office S.W.A.T. team was called to respond to the residence. Sheriff’s Office negotiators also responded. Negotiators were able to speak via telephone to the suspect and through conversation learned that the suspect had shot one victim inside the home. Deputies also learned during that time that multiple adults and children were inside the home being held by the armed suspect. Once the negotiators and S.W.A.T. team members determined that the suspect did not intend on ending the situation peacefully measures were taken to forcibly enter the home to save the hostage victims.

Shortly after midnight the S.W.A.T. team breached the doors of the residence and immediately started taking fire from the suspect. Entry team members began to return fire which resulted in a brief exchange of gunfire between the suspect and deputies. During the encounter with the suspect, two deputies were shot by the suspect. Two other deputies were able to fire at the suspect subsequently eliminating the threat. The two deputies as well as the suspect were transported to Greenville Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Ultimately, five victims to include two children were rescued from the home. One unknown male was found deceased in the home; believed to have been shot by the suspect when he initially entered the home. Three of the five victims sustained injuries during the incident that required transport to the hospital. It is unknown at this time the nature of the injuries or how the injuries occurred.

The gunshot wounds sustained by the two deputies are not life-threatening. Per Sheriff’s Office Policy, the two deputies who shot the suspect have been placed on administrative duty pending the Sheriff’s Office internal investigation in addition to the investigation currently being conducted by SLED.

Anderson County deputies have arrested a woman, a man and a teenager in connection to the disappearance of 53-year-old Chandrakant “C.J.” Patel, manager of the Exxon gas station on Clemson Boulevard.

Kyndra Leann Howell, 22, Jeremiah Christian Johnson, 29, and Zachary Demond Gantt, 17, are charged with kidnapping.

Last Sunday, Patel told clerk Andrew Williams at the Exxon station that he’d be back in a couple of hours, but never returned, according to investigators.

The break in the case came when the owner of a home Howell rents spotted Patel on surveillance video taken at the home.

News 4 has learned that the video shows Howell and Patel going into the home on Jerry Drive.

Several others are seen going in and out of the house, but Patel is never seen leaving the home.

The video also shows a car pull up behind the home.

Investigators said Monday that they learned Patel was held against his will for a short time in the residence in the Homeland Park Community.

Howell, Johnson, Gantt are being held at the Anderson County Detention Center pending a bond hearing.

The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting death of a teenage girl late Sunday night during a home invasion.

Deputies were called to a home on Burris Street just before midnight. According to an incident report obtained from the Sheriff’s Office, the 17-year-old was found lying on the driveway of the home with a gunshot wound to her abdomen when deputies arrived.

A witness at the scene says two men and the teen forced their way into the house after knocking on the door. They then forced two people to the kitchen floor and hit one in the head with a pistol.

She was left alone in the kitchen with a gun when one of the residents in the home says he tackled her and took the gun away, according to the incident report. Puckett was shot during the struggle and the men ran out of the home.

“In this situation it was more of an isolated incident, said Anderson County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Chad McBride. “I would think in this situation the nearby residents won’t have anything to worry about. Of course we don’t want these two individuals on the street either.”

Investigators say they have received numerous tips and believe they are close to identifying the suspects. If you have any information that may help investigators, call Anderson County Crimestoppers at (864) 260-4400.

Oconee County (May 29, 2012) Oconee County Sheriff’s office has captured Travis Foster, one of the two individuals who escaped from the Anderson county Detention Center Sunday night.
After receiving a call about a suspicious male just outside of Seneca earlier this morning, Oconee County deputies responded to the area of Wells Highway and located the suspicious male. After a foot chase ensued, Sgt. David Smith of OCSO, captured Travis Eugene Foster. Foster has been transported back to Anderson County Detention Center where he will be charged with the escape.

Anderson, SC (May 28, 2012) At approximately 11:00 PM Sunday night, two inmates escaped custody of the Anderson County Detention Center by chipping out a block of a cell in the older portion of the facility. After further investigation, it was determined that the two escapees used a metal table brace as the tool to penetrate the mortar in the cell. This gained access to an office where the inmates escaped by pushing out a window air conditioning unit then scaled a perimeter fence. Warrants have been obtained for escape.

Earlier today at approximately 2:40 pm, the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office and South Carolina Highway Patrol were in pursuit of a dark in color Ford Explorer. The pursuit left Anderson County and entered into Greenville County. While in Greenville County the Sheriff’s Office did not become actively involved in the pursuit. However, our deputies were available to assist Anderson County and the Highway Patrol if need be. The pursuit ended in front of the DMV office located on Saluda Dam Road. Once the pursuit ended Greenville County, deputies arrived on scene to assist in the apprehension of the suspect. The suspect refused to exit the vehicle and showed deputies and patrolmen on scene that he was in possession of a handgun. At that time the SWAT Team was activated in order to assist in a peaceful resolution. Once the SWAT Team arrived on scene, they maintained contact with the suspect and attempted to end the standoff peacefully. Less lethal means were utilized in order apprehend the suspect. The suspect then fired his weapon at deputies. Deputies then returned fire and struck the suspect at least one time. The suspect was then transported to Greenville Memorial Hospital.

The 7 deputies that returned fire have been placed on Administrative Duty. SLED has been called in to investigate the shooting incident. The Office of Professional Standards is investigating to ensure that policy and procedures were followed by deputies on scene. These actions are standard for deputy involved shootings. No deputies were injured in the incident.

Operation Intercept (OPIN) the U.S. Marshals fugitive apprehension task force made up of Deputy U.S. Marshals and officers with the Pickens, Greenville, Spartanburg, and Anderson County Sheriff’s Offices, Greenville City Police, SLED, alongside Deputy US Marshals from the Appalachian Fugitive Investigative Strike Team (AFIST) in Asheville, NC and Asheville Police, announce the location and apprehension of Tavish Yeargin, Kayla Williams, and Nyia Utsey at a hotel off of Old Haywood Rd in Asheville, NC late Wednesday evening.

Yeargin, Williams, and Utsey were wanted for the alleged Murder of Sean Timothy Dinneen on September 17 in the parking lot of Crosswell Baptist Church, located on South Fishtrap Road between Easley and Greenville, SC. Pickens County Sheriff’s Office began to work diligently with the OPIN Task Force immediately after determining that all three subjects were involved in the shooting. It was believed that Yeargin, Williams, and Utsey fled the Greenville area sometime on Tuesday September 20. On Wednesday September 21, it was reported and confirmed, Yeargin had robbed a bank in Spartanburg. OPIN Task Force developed information leading them to believe the three fugitives headed north to Asheville, NC after the alleged bank robbery. On Wednesday evening OPIN traveled to Asheville and joined forces with AFIST and the Asheville Police Department. After arriving in Asheville, Marshals were provided a tip leading them to a hotel at Old Haywood Rd. Once at the hotel Marshals located the fugitive’s vehicle and were able to determine Yeargin and an unknown female had checked into a room and Utsey and Williams in a separate room. OPIN and AFIST apprehended Yeargin, Williams, and Utsey in their separate rooms without incident. All three fugitives were transported to the Buncombe County Detention Center where they are awaiting bond and extradition hearings for their return to South Carolina.

“Fleeing may have seemed reasonable to these fugitives. However, law enforcement partnerships have proven fruitful again in the location and apprehension of Yeargin, Williams, and Utsey. These three significant and rapid arrests have brought justice to the Dinneen family. Let this be an invitation to other law enforcement agencies to contact OPIN when assistance is needed.” stated Kelvin Washington, US Marshal for the District of South Carolina.
