Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween is once again upon us. Sheriff Loftis would like to provide these basic safety tips so that your trick-or-treating experience is a not only a great adventure and safe night for you and your children.

You or a responsible adult should always accompany children ages 12 and under when trick-or-treating.

- Ensure costumes fit well, are flame retardant, and never obscure visibility.
- Have your trick-or-treater wear reflective clothing and/or carry a light or glowstick.
- Children over the age of 12 who are responsible enough to go without you, should stay in groups, follow an agreed upon route, and watch for cars.
- Check our website, www.gsco.org , for registered offenders residing in the area.
- Teach your children to never enter any home without you or without your permissions and only approach homes that are well-lit.
- Remind your children to stay in well-lit areas, never take shortcuts, and never go into isolated areas.
- Let your children know to tell you or a trusted adult if they see anything weird or unusual.
- Teach children to bring treats home before eating them. Eat only factory-wrapped treats unless you know the giver well.
- Teach your children to say NO and GET AWAY from any person or situation making them feel scared, uncomfortable, or confused; even if it means yelling, kicking, attracting attention or any other means of resisting. Trust their feeling, and be sure to tell a trusted adult.

Charleston Police Looking For Narcotics Thief

Police say a man with a gun walked into the Rite-Aid pharmacy on Ashley River Road in West Ashley. Police say he demanded narcotics, placed the drugs in a white trash bag and took off.

Officials with the Charleston Police Department have not yet released a description of the suspect.

No one was hurt during the robbery.

If you have any information in the case, you’re asked to call Crime Stoppers at 554-1111. You don’t have to leave your name and could earn a cash reward.

Charleston Officers Need Help Finding Suspect in Fatal Shooting

At approximately 4:05 a.m. on Saturday, Charleston County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to Club Frazier’s on County Line Road Ravenel, in reference to a fatal shooting. Deputies were advised Security Guards in the parking lot of the club heard gunshots in the parking lot and observed a male subject running from a vehicle which was in the lot.

Upon arrival a female was found to have sustained fatal injuries.

A K-9 track was conducted through the woods behind the business near Moberry Road where the track ended.

Motive for the shooting is not known at this time. Detectives and the Charleston County Coroner’s Office are continuing the investigation.

One Year Old Struck by Vehicle on Edisto Island

On June 22, 2012, at approximately 2:30 p.m. Charleston County Sheriff’s deputies responded to Hwy 174 and Hwy 164 in reference to a one year old that was struck by a vehicle on Hwy 174 on Edisto Island. Investigation at this point has determined that the one year old was initially in a vehicle with the parent and in the course of removing an item from the vehicle the child was placed outside of the car.

The driver wasn’t aware that the child was not in the vehicle and began to leave the driveway striking the child. The child sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported by the family to Hwy 174 and Hwy 164 to meet with Charleston County EMS for transport to an area hospital for evaluation.

Summerville Man Found Dead After Home Invasion

Investigators say a 38-year-old Summerville man has been found dead in his home and a window in his back door was broken.

Authorities said they are investigating the death of Johnny Young Jr. as a homicide.

Dorchester County deputies say a family member called 911 around 11:30 a.m. Friday, saying Young had been stabbed and wasn’t breathing.

Coroner Chris Nisbet says it was obvious someone killed Young, but wasn’t ready to release a cause of death.

Charged with Manufacturing Meth in Dorchester County

On June 16 deputies from the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office responded to Aileen Drive in the Calomet Valley subdivision to assist in a welfare check for some minor children. When deputies arrived they found what appeared to be materials used in the manufacture of methamphetamine. The Dorchester County Metro Narcotics Unit was called and, after obtaining search warrants, entered two buildings and discovered finished product and several items used in the production of the drug. The listed persons were charged with Manufacturing Methamphetamine with other charges pending. The minor children were taken into protective custody. Both defendants have a history of prior drug charges.

Deputies Respond to Hang Up Call and Find 144 Marijuana Plants

On April 29, 2011 the Dorchester County Metro Narcotics Unit executed a drug search warrant at Savannah Round in the Iron Gate subdivision. Deputies responded to the residence after a 911 hang up call was received by the counties 911 system. Deputies attempted make contact with someone at the residence and after a failed attempt they checked the exterior of the residence and found an unlocked garage door. Deputies checked the garage and found an unlocked door into the house. Deputies entered the residence to make sure there was not an emergency and found a quantity of marijuana growing inside a bedroom. Deputies exited the residence and called Narcotics Investigators and a search warrant obtained. A total of 144 marijuana plants were seized from the residence as well as 4lbs 6.56 oz. of processed marijuana ready for distribution. The homeowner returned during the search of the residence and was arrested for trafficking marijuana and possession with intent to distribute marijuana.
