Standoff After Pursuit Leads Into Greenville and Anderson Counties

Earlier today at approximately 2:40 pm, the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office and South Carolina Highway Patrol were in pursuit of a dark in color Ford Explorer. The pursuit left Anderson County and entered into Greenville County. While in Greenville County the Sheriff’s Office did not become actively involved in the pursuit. However, our deputies were available to assist Anderson County and the Highway Patrol if need be. The pursuit ended in front of the DMV office located on Saluda Dam Road. Once the pursuit ended Greenville County, deputies arrived on scene to assist in the apprehension of the suspect. The suspect refused to exit the vehicle and showed deputies and patrolmen on scene that he was in possession of a handgun. At that time the SWAT Team was activated in order to assist in a peaceful resolution. Once the SWAT Team arrived on scene, they maintained contact with the suspect and attempted to end the standoff peacefully. Less lethal means were utilized in order apprehend the suspect. The suspect then fired his weapon at deputies. Deputies then returned fire and struck the suspect at least one time. The suspect was then transported to Greenville Memorial Hospital.

The 7 deputies that returned fire have been placed on Administrative Duty. SLED has been called in to investigate the shooting incident. The Office of Professional Standards is investigating to ensure that policy and procedures were followed by deputies on scene. These actions are standard for deputy involved shootings. No deputies were injured in the incident.
